Here’s a history teacher’s guide to making the most of every hour.
Philadelphia is one of America’s most walkable cities, making it easy to experience history, food, art, and culture in just one day. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend, a business trip, or a quick stop on the East Coast, this itinerary highlights some of the city’s best attractions.
As a local U.S. history teacher and walking tour guide, I’ve designed this itinerary to combine Philadelphia’s most iconic landmarks with some of my favorite local recommendations.
A History Teacher’s Guide to the Perfect Day in Philly!
8:30 am: Madis Coffee in the Curtis
Start your day inside the stunning Curtis Building. Enjoy a coffee and pastry while admiring one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful mosaics
9:00 am: Visit Independence Hall
Take a self-guided tour of Independence Hall before the crowds arrive. And, no tickets needed!
10:15 AM: join a history swiftly Walking Tour
Join a fun, story-driven walking tour led by a local U.S. history teacher. You’ll explore Independence Hall, Washington Square, Society Hill, Old City, and the fascinating stories behind the people who built Philadelphia and America.
12:45 pm: Lunch at Campos Philly Cheesesteaks
After the tour, walk a few blocks to Campos for one of Philadelphia’s classic cheesesteaks. It’s convenient, casual, and right in the heart of Old City.
1:30 PM: Walk Through Reading Terminal Market
Rather than making it your main meal, stop by Reading Terminal Market to experience one of America’s great public markets. Grab a sweet treat, ice cream, or Pennsylvania Dutch dessert before continuing your day.
2:00 PM: City Hall & Love Park
Walk around the base of magnificent City Hall and stop at the iconic LOVE sculpture. This is one of Philadelphia’s most recognizable and photogenic areas.
2:45 PM: The Barnes Foundation
Spend the afternoon exploring one of the world’s finest art collections. Even visitors who aren’t museum enthusiasts find the Barnes surprisingly engaging because of its unique displays and intimate atmosphere.
5:00 PM: Rocky Steps & The Museum of Art
Head to the Rocky Steps for one of the city’s best views down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Take the classic photo before returning to Old City or Center City.
5:30 PM: Ride the PhilLY Phlash
Hop aboard the PHLASH for a convenient ride back toward Center City or Old City while enjoying views of many of Philadelphia’s most popular attractions.
7:00 PM: Dinner at… so many options!
Philadelphia is one of America’s great food cities, with everything from historic taverns to nationally acclaimed restaurants. Check out Philadelphia Magazine’s 2026 Guide to some of the best dining destinations.
8:00 PM: Drinks and Social Time at red owl tavern
Finish the evening at Red Owl Tavern with a craft cocktail, local beer, or glass of wine overlooking Independence Hall. It’s the perfect place to recap your great day in Philadelphia before retiring for the evening.
While one day is never enough to experience everything Philadelphia has to offer, this itinerary provides a great introduction to America’s most historic city. From Independence Hall and Old City to world-class museums and dining, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Philadelphia’s past and present.
